The Kremlin appeared in the XIV century when the prince of Moscow Ivan Kalita built a large fortress of oak called the Kremlin. Half a century later his grandson Dmitry Donskoy raised walls of white stone round the fortress. At the turn of the XVI century the Kremlin was rebuilt.

During the great Battle of Kursk, the village of Prokhorovka in Belgorod Oblast was a stage of the largest tank battle in history (July 12, 1943). The World War II monuments include the Belgorod Diorama and a huge cathedral in Prokhorovka. Belgorod is an administrative, industrial and cultural centre of Belgorod Oblast, established in 1954.

For a long time (just till 1917) in Belgorod 35-th dragoon Belgorod regiment was staying. Soldiers from Belgorod fought under the banners of field-marshal count Suvorov and in the war of 1812 year.

Here, near Belgorod is a small settlement, Prokhorovka by name. In July,12, 1943 near Prokhorovka there was the biggest tank-battle in all Human History. It the battle took part near 1200 tanks and a lot of planes. This battle was one of the greatest victories of the Red Army in that War.

How can this love of the Russians for their black sour bread be explained? As the latest studies have shown, this bread is very wholesome. Beer and kvass dregs were used as leaven. The bread was baked in the Russian oven where even heat contributed to thorough baking. The loaf was taken out of the oven and tapped on the bottom.
